Hey folks,
This forum isn't really my domain, but let me go ahead and introduce myself.
My name is Angela Nieves, most know me as Ang, and I'm the manager for PAC's Art Expo.
What is the Art Expo? You ask, well, think of an art show with a kick, and I'm here to blurb about one of the "kicks" we're hurling at you this year...
THE COSTUME EXPO.
Have you been to the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC?
Do you have costumes that don't fit you anymore but you love them enough to show them off in a gallery-like setting? Or maybe just older and 'retired' that you still want to see the light of day?
Do you potentially want to show off your costume before hitting the catwalk at the convention?
Here's your chance!
This year I'm trying out something new...the ability for designers and creators to show of their costumes in a static display as a part of the Art Expo! Exhibitors will have to provide their own dress form, mannequin or display mechanism, (though the con may be working to acquire extra torsos.) and information about the costumes they are displaying.
This is open to ALL COSTUME TYPES, by the way. I will not discriminate that they be Anime/Manga/Gaming only. So in addition to fine 'cosplay' work, you can bring your EGL, Star Wars, Renaissance, Victorian creations as well. This could be a great time to get your skills noticed.
There will be a small fee for this that will allow you to set up as many costumes as you like or even paper artwork for the gallery. This will allow exhibitors the ability to show off their costumes for all 3 days, and the right to remove them for wearing in the cosplay events or even on a nightly basis if they are feeling edgy about leaving them up. (Security measures will be in place!)
We will have a staffer at all times during convention hours in the area of the costumes while attendees browse to make sure that they look with their eyes and not their hands.
Also...exhibitors can have the change of selling or auctioning off their work as they see fit along with the rest of the paper artwork. There also may be a potential for a small contest.
Like what you hear? Great! I look forward to seeing some fantastic entries and answering any questions you may have. Remember, this is still in the baby-step stages of planning, but any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!

This is so funny, b/c I had just noticed the info about the Costume Institute in the other forum this morning and had come back to post there when I saw your thread here!
I think that this is a hugely awesome idea! I have stated on cosplay.com that my ideal masquerade would be costumes on dress dummies with the person who made it standing there to talk about construction. Who needs walk-ons or skits? Psshhh!
I had been looking at the Art Expo info thinking that I might try to do some wearable-art for that. I'm quite keen to do some quilted "armor" and embellished hakama (BTW - I'm pretty sure that you posted in a thread I started over in the AB forums about machine embroidery.) But now I'll have to think about whether I would want to make something for the costume institute instead.
Anyway - whether I display or not, I am definitely excited about seeing other people's work and talking with others who like the "cos" more than the "play". This is exactly the kind of thing that I was hoping to see at PAC!

Well depending on how well it goes, it's a slight possibility that I may pull it over to Anime Boston next year. But let's focus on PAC first.
Oh and btw, I don't post at Cosplay.com because those forums scare me, but if you would be so kind as to PLUG this event over there, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, coscom is always chaotic and frequently frightening. I usually just hang out in the Costume Help section tendering sewing advice. But there are other sections that I am careful to steer clear of. XD
I will definitely plug this event there. I'm also on the ICG email list and will pass the info along to those folks as well.

Thanks for posting, Ang!
This really IS the best place to post Costume expo stuff. Cosplayers are more than likely going to visit here first for stuff like this.
Oh, and if you can get dress forms, I'll bring two of my costumes for this.

Oooh! I'm glad I'm within driving distance, because I may bring Brahne to this event. Need another duct tape body for support, though.
I have 1-2 costumes that would be lovely to show off.

So, after realizing how tiring walking around in things are at a huge convention center, I'm psyched for this thing.
Is there going to be a process on how people can submit costumes and information? (Tentacles on display... muhahahahahaha!!!!)

Now that Anime Boston is over and I can focus solely on PAC and not the sickening amount of artwork I need to get finished, I'll be working on a submission process for the Art and Costume Expo. Space is limited, and I'm going to try to tag along on the next trip to the RICC to check out the room the expo is going to be in. From there I'll derive a solid floor plan to figure out how many costumes we can accommodate and the requirements.
Stay tuned!

Ang - I stopped by your table like 3 times to meet you IRL and everytime I did there was a booth babe watching your space (though they used a different b-word to describe themselves XD)
I am very much looking forward to a tiny con. Hmmmm....I wonder why that is? o_0?

i wish my helmet was intact and i wasn't MISSING two essential pieces of my outfit (really pissed as they are also used as renaissance faire pieces and now i can't USE them cause i can't FIND them. i had them last summer!), cause even though the outfit itself wasn't anything spectacular, the Mallet Accessory was AWESOME....
and i have that on GOOD authority...

sadly, as mentioned, the costume is in disarray (plus, i think i gained like 20 pounds since then)...
i SUPPOSE i could display the mallet at my table in the AA as long as its clearly marked that it's not for sale, but i'm NOT a costume designer (a friend helped me with this) and i can't fix the helmet and the pieces that are missing are not easily replaced (i have no money) and lastly...
*sniff*
i can't cosplay cause i'm on staff....

Will people be able to take pictures or videos of the Costume Expo? I know art Expo's and Artist Alley's are more restrictive on what photography/videography can be taken in those areas.

No. Video and still photographs are prohibited in the Art Expo entirely. Unless we put the costumes on display elsewhere, everything will be in the same room and we can't take chances. I hope you understand.
However, I'm thinking of allowing sketchbooks or doing a sketch session like they do at larger art museums. (The RISD museum has newsprint and charcoal around for you to doodle with in certain parts of the facility.) That depends on of course if artists are cool with that, and time allowed.

Duct tape dress forms rock, and are pretty darn cheap! I think youtube has a few tutorials on how to make them, but the basic ideas are all the same from what I've seen.

I was actually thinking about making one of these just for general use for making costumes. However, I live in a TINY apartment and I would have no room to store it when its not being used!
